My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt.

As each student came into the class, they were given one question each. They were asked to sit at a table with others who had the same question. There are 24 in the group so roughly 3 students per question.

The modern world provides two new ways to find love — online matchmaking and speed dating. In the last few years, these methods have moved from a last resort for the loveless to a more accepted way for millions to try to meet their mates.

Just like all previous events, it was a fantastic night. The event took place at the beautiful Rauschenberg Gallery Space in Chelsea. With scientists in the first row, artists in the second, the night began with two featured dates. The second pair featured Jennifer Monson , an artistic director, choreographer and performer, dating Shahid Naeem , a professor of ecology and evolution at Columbia University. Eli Kintisch , a writer for Science Magazine, moderated.

One of the benefits of speed dating, especially if you’re new to the dating scene, is that you don’t have to experience face-to-face or phone-to-phone rejection. It’s just computer rejection when.

I was invited to moderate a NASA panel on exoplanets, with the twist of looking at them through the lens of science fiction. How do the planets we discovery compare to those seen in Star Trek, Stargate, and so on? This time by my lgood friends at the Science and Entertainment Exchange , a group a program of the National Academy of Sciences! So no graphics, nothing but their own voice and enthusiasm. That sounded like a lot of fun, and I love the Exchange, so I agreed immediately.

It turned out to be a good choice. I had a blast. The event was live-streamed by Skybound Entertainment , and the folks involved were me, my pal and fellow astronomer Clifford V. Mays , and economist Alison Sanchez , agricultural researcher Bobby Williams , with the whole thing moderated by Eric Heisserer , who wrote the screenplay for the wonderful movie Arrival. It was a lot of fun! And again, with exoplanets on my brain especially since I had just given a TEDxBoulder talk on that very subject I decided that would be a good topic for my, um, speed date.

Big Dating: It’s a (Data) Science

Morgan Shimbaku talks with group of girls This write-up is by teen Sirisha Gudavalli. In order to learn more about what science actually is and what doing science in the real world looks like, it is important to talk to real scientists and learn about both their research and their journeys to getting to where they are today. First, we had Morgan Shimabuku talk to us about water conservation and its importance to the agricultural sector of our economy and our day-to-day life, especially in places like California.

Next, we had Jay Kroll talk to us about the atmospheric chemistry of Venus and sunlight driven reactions of sulfur dioxide with water and other atmospheric species. Afterwards, we had Megan Peterson who talked to us about evolutionary biology and the genetics of plants.

This activity is a great way for students to find out key facts about the planets in our solar system. Each student should be given a number of the speed dating cards.

The drinks were cheap and the place was packed. Most importantly, while the odds of “getting lucky” were low, they were nonzero. So even if she said, “You’re more likely to get struck by lightning than to go home with me,” he could answer, “Awesome! You’re saying I have a chance to go home with you? If you want to meet someone, there are any number of big dating sites and apps available. Niche sites like OurTime. In the mobile first arena, Tinder is the undisputed leader.

In fact, 11 percent of American couples who have been together for 10 years or less met online.

One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower. With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students. I communicate a defined outcome as well as a time limit to help focus the discussions. Steps for using the method in class: Use speed learning in cases where each student has something unique to share, it could be workshopping their project ideas or sharing a news article they were asked to being in.

Speed dating is named after social events designed to help singles find a romantic partner. People spend an evening in a space where they might go on a date and rapidly encounter many potential romantic partners to understand what qualities they want in a partner or mate.

Over researchers, clinicians and postgraduate students from 30 different schools, centres and institutes across UNSW recently came together to share their experience and challenges across the field of bioinformatics. The event aimed to showcase the research happening across the university, connect different skill sets, and enhance opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. With ample opportunity for professional matchmaking, researchers gave over 22 short, sharp presentations to their colleagues.

Presenters highlighted their research interests, areas of challenge and opportunities for collaboration. A relatively new field of study, bioinformatics combines elements of biology and computer science. It underpins and enables research across the life sciences. It has real-world applications in the development of personalised and preventative medicine, drug development, evolutionary studies, climate change, waste clean-up and a range of other research areas. Bioinformatics lies in the middle of biology, molecular medicine, computer science, maths and statistics.

It intrinsically requires experts to come together from faculties of engineering, biology and medicine. Because bioinformatics offers a wide range of research opportunity, the possibilities of interdisciplinary collaboration are endless. The purpose of the event was to showcase what is happening in the field at UNSW, where researchers might need help, and to create broader opportunity for discovery and application.

November 6, Thank your medial prefrontal cortex, a brain region now discovered to play a major role in romantic decision-making. Different parts of this region, which sits near the front of the brain, make a snap judgment about physical attraction and about whether the person is Mr. Right — all within milliseconds of seeing a new face, a new study from Ireland finds.

The research is the first to use real-world dating to examine how the brain makes fast romantic judgments. To conduct the study, researchers recruited 78 women and 73 men, all heterosexual and single, from Trinity College Dublin to participate in a speed-dating event.

Last week, I participated, along with six other scientists, in a “science speed-dating” event put on by the Exchange that was meant to increase the accuracy of science representation on big and little screens.

We scientists had seven minutes to explain the basics of our research and did this seven times, moving quickly between the designated rooms where seven groups of people from the entertainment industry plus some science-interested members of the public waited. We were encouraged to bring a prop we could carry in our hands, but no Powerpoint slides or video clips were allowed. In an email message to me after the event, Program Director Rick Loverd explained that since its founding in , the Exchange has hosted about events of various types, including about a dozen science speed dating gatherings: The most common way for one of these consults to unfold is through a screenwriter, producer, director, studio executive, or actor calling our Any entertainment professional who calls that line with a question about Science, Engineering, or Medicine will be connected to a field expert for free.

I worked hard in my seven minutes to convey not only the basics of the capacities of animals to love and grieve, but also to tell a few stories about individual animals to bring the emotion and cognition of elephants, chimpanzees and, yes, fish alive for my listeners.
