How To Wire 2 Or More Motion Sensors To The Same Lights Situations can arise where it would be very convenient to have more than one motion sensor or motion detector, as shown in Figure 1, turn on the same group of lights. This is a common occurrence with long wheelchair ramps. Figure 1 – Motion detector or sensor In order to have more than one motion sensor or motion detector turn on the same group of lights it is necessary to wire the motion sensors in parallel with each other, in the same manner as the lights are wired. As long as at least one motion sensor is detecting motion, the lights will remain on. Each of the motion sensors must be individually rated to handle the total power load of all of the lights that you wish to turn on. Figure 2 is a schematic of the wiring of 3 motion sensors to a group of lights and Figure 3 is a diagram of the actual wiring connections. You can have as many motion sensors as you want in parallel.

One of the easiest things you can do to help protect your property is to install a motion sensor. It works by turning on when an object or person gets close enough. Let’s face it, light is not an intruder’s best friend. You will have the added benefit of them lighting your way when you come home at night. Below you will find two different installation techniques.
The first is installing a new light fixture that comes pre-wired with a motion sensor. The second is adding a motion sensor to an existing light fixture. Before you dive in, please check out this article on a few things to know about motion sensors. Place a strip of the electrical tape over the breaker that controls the circuit. You can also tape a sign to the door of the electrical panel box stating “Keep Out – Working on Electric!
Use the screwdriver to remove the bolts holding the fixture to the box. As you remove the second bolt, make sure to hold onto the fixture so it doesn’t fall away. With the fixture hanging by the wires, use your voltage tester to ensure that the power is still off. With one hand holding the fixture, use your other hand to unscrew the wire nuts and separate the wires.
Just because the stripes are in a certain order doesn’t mean the resistor has a direction! Resistors are the same forward and backwards, it doesnt matter which way they are used. Highlight the text below to see the answer Red – Red – Brown – Gold What is the value of this resistor? Highlight the text below to see the answer Ha! Trick question, it is not possible to put a resistor in ‘backwards’.
They work either way!

First I tested if the connections and logics work on the breadboard. Another critique I got was the wording of the reminder can be clearer and possible evoke more guilt from the user. Both critique are important points that I will consider when working forward on the product.

Do you know for sure that both outlets of the duplex outlet are controled by the switch? If for some reason one of the three conductors red or black is either surplus or not controlled by the switch then it should be easy enough to do what you want to do by “sharing” the neutral wire, though I have no idea if this scenario will comply with the electrical code. You’d simply use the surplus conductor to convey unswitched power from the switch box out to the duplex fixture where you would tie in the feed for the lamp.
This scenario might however adversely impact the proper functioning of any ground fault interuption device that is currently protecting the outlet which, by the way, any outside fixture probably needs to have. Only the black wire is being used though. The red wire is just capped and sitting in the box dead. I wasn’t sure if I could use the red wire for the lamp post with the neutral used with another ground fault circuit.
It would be too disruptive to dig up a new trench for the new wires. There’s a lot of landscaping and block in the way. To go under the walkway would be pretty deep and then to move all that rock on the other side to get to the house Is too much work and even more work to put it back the way it was. I was trying to find an easier way to do this and a faster way at that.
Solar Radiation Battery wiring diagrams The following diagrams illustrate how to get increased current more power by using parallel wiring and how to increase voltage levels by using series wiring. You can do both using series and parallel wiring in combinations. Use parallel wiring to increase current power. This diagram shows a simple parallel circuit to increase current or power.

Getting started A gangly-looking motion detector floodlight is fine for scaring off a backyard intruder, but it doesn’t look good on your house. A remote-style motion detector is a better choice. You can connect it to any type of decorative fixture—even existing ones—and mount it discreetly off to the side. This article will show you how to install and connect a remote sensor to new or existing lights.
The wiring is a little more complicated than it is for most electrical projects, but even a novice can handle it by following the wiring diagrams we provide. We won’t detail the most basic aspects of electrical work, so you may need to do some further reading. Apply for an electrical permit at the local inspections department so an inspector can check your work. The toughest part of this project may be running the wires that connect the sensor to the light fixtures.
But in many cases, this project is only practical where you have open studs, as in an unfinished garage as we show , or during a major remodeling project. If new wiring isn’t an option for you, consider sensors that give you similar results but with little or no rewiring. Before you buy a sensor, add up the wattage ratings on the fixtures it will control. The wattage rating of the sensor must be at least as high as the total watts of the fixtures.
For example, if you have two fixtures, each rated to hold a watt bulb, the sensor must be rated to handle at least watts. The Tuff Dome sensor is rated for watts.
Outdoor wiring projects are not difficult for a do-it-yourselfer, but, for safety reasons, outdoor wiring codes must be followed. Outdoor wiring projects fall into two general categories: Functional lighting illuminates high-use areas such as steps, stairs, gates, walkways, and outdoor grills. Decorative lighting adds dimension and mood to exterior space such as highlighting tress and shrubs with light. Functional lighting can also be decorative.
Always hook up the ground wire to a GND pin for general power. For the analog photocell input, we built a voltage divider to pull up the analog signal when the photocell receives light. We matched the resistance of the voltage divider with the theoretical minimum voltage of the photocell.

Sep 22, , I’m hanging a ceiling fan that has an light attachment. So, from the junction box ceiling there are 3 wires black, white and red. On the housing unit fan assembly there are 3 wires a black, blue and white. The ground wire green is attached to the mounting bracket I must attach first before anything else. So, I attached the black wire from junction box ceiling to black and blue wire from the housing on fan as instructed then the white from ceiling to the white housing on fan.
I have no idea what the red is for so, I capped it off. My fan work but, the light doesn’t. What is the red wire for? Please stay clear with terms i’ve used to explain how to correct the problem. Thx The red wire would indicate another switch that would be connected to the light. Is there another switch?
How to check and adjust the garage door opener photo cell sensors. The photo cells on a garage door opener will never affect the opening of your door in any manner whatsoever therefore if your door doesn’t open it is not a problem with the photo-cell sensors. However this will never be the cause because in fact they do not even need to be hooked up at all during the opening cycle. However they will stop the door from closing normally. If your garage door will not close at all the first thing you should try is to close the door by maintaining constant pressure on the wall button.
LEDs. For this lesson, a red, green and blue LED are best. Make sure you get a “5mm” or “3mm” LED, with two legs, as shown in the example image.
Yes As you can see there are a few differences. For one the ST runs at 3. This means a buffer chip or level shifting is necessary, you can use resistors or a chip like the or equiv. Second, the interface is Serial one bit at a time instead of Parallel 8 bits at a time. This means it uses waaay fewer pins yay! The biggest downside is that you can’t read from the LCD in serial mode, only write.
This means that the chip has to keep track of the display the KS lets you read or write. So whatever microcontroller you use will need to spend bytes 1Kb of RAM on the display memory. For some chips this is a little and some its a lot – you will need to check the micro’s datasheet. And if you’re using a ‘ note that half the RAM is going to the display so you wont have a lot left over. This pretty much means you can’t use something with an SD card like a Wave Shield or Data logger Shield at the same time you will straight-up run out of RAM and it will be wierd so dont bother.
We’ve written a tidy library for both C and Arduinoese, if you aren’t using an AVR the C code is very portable and should take only a few minutes to turn into your favorite microcontroller. Download it from github – click Download Source to grab it all. If you are using an Arduino, install the ST folder which contains the library and an example sketch Wire it up!
On the other hand, a compact fluorescent CFL requires a non-electronic, or mechanical control. Some photo controls actually leak a small amount of electrical current in the off position. The best way to test if your existing photocell is compatible with CFLs is to measure the voltage at the socket when the sun is shining brightly – a digital meter is required.
The voltage should be 0.

Lighting fixtures will last longer, cast more light where you want it and require less maintenance. The farther a light is from the transformer and the more lights installed between it and the transformer , the less light it will put out. A good rule of thumb is to put no more than watts of lighting on one line. If you want to put ten watt lights on a circuit, make a tee connection with five lights on one line and five on the other. You can also minimize voltage drop by using a thicker gauge wire.
Always leave a little extra wire as you hook up the lights. This will give you the freedom to move a light after you’ve hooked it up for testing or after you’ve installed it. Burying the wires should be your last step. Lay everything out, hook up your lights, test your voltage, and look at your results at night before burying the lines.
